Mom\u2019s table. Meatloaf like a peace treaty. Pitcher of Old Fashioneds that somebody \u2014 fine, me \u2014 treated like a hydration strategy. You wore the cardigan. I wore a shirt that still had grass clippings on the cuff because I mowed her lawn at four and she said dinner was \u201ccasual, not a fundraiser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then you started in about soft power and midterm loyalty coupons and how a memorial got turned into a war briefing. I had opinions. Loud ones. Volume that belongs on a riding mower, not next to Deb\u2019s good plates. I may have said the phrase \u201ccardigan cosplay.\u201d I may have said Dallas is done apologizing for wanting a check that clears. I definitely said the group text is not a UN Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>Deb stood up. The room did that Montessori silence where even the dog knows it misbehaved. She said, and I am quoting because she made me write it on a napkin: \u201cThis table is a demilitarized zone. You will finish your food. You will not finish each other. The blog is shared. The bourbon is not a personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slept on the pullout. I drank water like it was a punishment. I am posting anyway because Mom also said we do not let Friday night become a secret family mythology. So here is the sober-ish version:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can hate the dividend and still admit five grand is five grand.<\/li>\n<li>You can love a memorial and still admit a war briefing is a war briefing.<\/li>\n<li>You can call me Magaverse lawn trash and I will still show up Saturday with the mower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am not soft. I am dehydrated. And I am just saying what half the group chat thought while Deb confiscated the whiskey bottle like it was a talking stick.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway \u2014 Buck \u201cLindy\u201d Lindstrom, contributing brother \/ currently banned from the bar cart until further notice<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>Editor\u2019s note (Theo):<\/strong> Mom\u2019s rule stands \u2014 note goes under, never above. Buck is correct that Deb confiscated the bourbon. He is incorrect that volume equals an argument. Soft power is not a riding mower. Soft power is surviving Friday without turning meatloaf into a midterm. Fill the water glass.
