Soft power, if soft power is an intercept that still has to explain itself to 1.5 billion people before breakfast.

CNN reporting Wednesday is blunt: Saudi Arabia said it destroyed a Houthi drone on the outskirts of Islam’s holiest city on Tuesday — the first time, according to coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki, that the Iran-backed Yemeni group has targeted Mecca in nearly a decade, since a 2017 ballistic-missile intercept. Soft power is not a restricted-airspace footnote. Soft power is a holy city that still gets treated like a dartboard in someone else’s war.

Here is the cardigan-left spreadsheet. Al-Maliki called the security of the holy site a “red line,” said the drone was destroyed before it entered Mecca’s restricted airspace, and vowed “necessary and deterrent measures.” The Houthis — who also revere Mecca — denied the charge within hours. Military spokesman Yahya Saree said the targets were Saudi oil facilities and military bases “far removed from the holy places,” branded the Mecca claim a fabrication, and insisted there is “no threat whatsoever from Yemen to the holy sites.” Soft power is not a dueling press release. Soft power is noticing when the map’s most sacred coordinate becomes a propaganda prize.

The Muslim world did not shrug. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned strikes that “violate the sanctity of holy sites and mosques.” Pakistan’s prime minister Shehbaz Sharif — whose country recently signed a joint defense pact with Riyadh — called the act “dastardly and heinous” and affirmed support for Saudi Arabia, even without naming the Houthis. Soft power is not a hashtag pilgrimage. Soft power is a 57-member body that still remembers fear in a civilian sky is not a strategy.

Zoom out and the Red Sea is already a choke point with a body count. Houthis struck Saudi cities earlier this week — Khamis Mushait, Abha, Taif — injuring thirteen civilians; claimed a Yanbu Aramco hit; seized a Red Sea port city and an island near a Hormuz backup waterway. Saudi forces answered with airstrikes. Yanbu oil loadings remain suspended; Aramco cut supplies to some European customers until mid-November; crude climbed back above $100 as the U.S.–Iran war keeps slamming doors on the region’s escape valves. Soft power is not a barrel price. Soft power is a pilgrimage route that should not need an air-defense briefing.

Deb will reply-all that we are not doing “Mecca math” at dinner. Buck will text “just shoot every drone.” I love them. I also love a midterm season that can sell balloon drops in Dallas while a holy city’s outskirts become the newest slide in a war deck that already includes Hormuz, Yanbu, and a forever fight Trump swore he would not start. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly. Soft power is not a red line drawn after the intercept. Soft power is a sky over Mecca that still belongs to worship, not to whoever launched last.

Sources: CNN, Sept. 16, 2026 (Saudi intercept near Mecca; al-Maliki “red line” / first in ~decade since 2017; destroyed before restricted airspace; Houthi denial via Saree; OIC condemnation; Sharif “dastardly and heinous”; Taif/Abha/Khamis Mushait injuries; Yanbu Aramco claim; Red Sea port/island gains; Yanbu loadings suspended; Europe supply cuts to mid-Nov; oil above $100; U.S.–Iran / Hormuz backdrop) — https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/16/middleeast/saudi-arabia-houthis-mecca-attack-intl-hnk .
