Soft power, if soft power is a president who wants one-percent money while the grocery aisle still runs hot.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised the federal funds target by a quarter point to a range of 3.75 to 4.00 percent — the first hike since 2023 — in a unanimous Federal Open Market Committee vote. Chair Kevin Warsh told the press the “plain fact” is that inflation is “too high, and has been for too long.” Soft power is not a vibes check on the president’s preferred rate. Soft power is a dual mandate that still notices when prices refuse to sit down.

The White House heard a different song. Trump branded the move a “raise against Trump,” called the rate-setting committee “hostile,” and said rates should be 1 percent or lower and cut fast. He also said he still backs Warsh — “I’m relying on Kevin. But he has a very tough board” — and claimed he told the chair to “do what you want” because the board would carry it anyway. Soft power is not a loyalty oath with a dissenting spreadsheet. Soft power is a central bank that can hike even when the Oval Office wants a midterm discount.

Warsh, once cast by Democratic critics as a potential “sock puppet,” joined the unanimous hike and stressed a standard: act only when confident underlying inflation is moving to the objective “clearly and at sufficient speed.” That standard, he said, has not been satisfied. Markets largely priced the move; 10-year yields still flirted with the five-percent neighborhood as inflation uncertainty refused to clock out. Soft power is not a sock puppet. Soft power is a press conference that says the homework is late.

Sources: Reuters, Sept. 16, 2026 (unanimous +25 bp to 3.75–4.00%; first hike since 2023; tariffs / Iran energy shock / AI boom; further tightening flagged); AFP, Sept. 17, 2026 (Warsh “too high… too long”; Trump “raise against Trump” / “hostile”; August CPI 3.4%; SEP PCE 3.7% / GDP 2.3%; majority see another hike); Federal Reserve, Warsh press conference transcript, Sept. 16, 2026 (target range 3¾–4%; dual-mandate framing; median funds rate ~4.1% year-end; Warsh withheld own SEP projection); Fortune, Sept. 17, 2026 (Trump board blame; “do what you want” framing; inflation not ≤2% for 5+ years); Reuters, Sept. 16, 2026 (Trump: rates should be 1% or lower). Buck will text “just print cheaper money.” I love them. I also love a republic that can sell soft power as a personal insult to one man while households keep paying the tariff-war-AI stack in rent, gas, and groceries. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly. Soft power is not calling inflation politics because the midterms are hungry. Soft power is a rate that still has to match the receipt.

Here is the midterm invoice. Reuters and AFP both put the same drivers on the ledger: Trump’s signature tariffs, the energy shock from the Iran war, and the capital binge of the AI boom have kept price pressures intense enough that the Fed judged a hold was no longer enough. August CPI sat at 3.4 percent — unchanged month-to-month, still well above the Fed’s 2 percent goal. In the Summary of Economic Projections, the median path pointed to about 4.1 percent by year-end, with PCE inflation revised up to 3.7 percent for 2026. Soft power is not pretending a war and a tariff wall are free. Soft power is admitting the bill shows up in the overnight rate.

Fed +25 bp to 3.75–4.00% — soft power with a unanimous hike, tariffs-plus-war inflation, and Trump branding the board hostile.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-184","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
