On September 22, 2026, President Donald Trump is due to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen at the United Nations General Assembly in New York for a trilateral signing ceremony on Greenland security. A White House official confirmed the ceremony to ABC News. Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, puts the meeting at about 10:30 a.m. ET. The text of the agreement had not been published when the wires filed.<\/p>\n

What the outlets do agree on is the shape of the deal. Reuters and CNBC report it is expected to expand the U.S. military footprint beyond the existing Pituffik Space Base \u2014 reopening activity at Narsarsuaq, a former Cold War airbase whose population has dwindled to a few dozen, and placing forces at Mestersvig, an eastern outpost used by Denmark\u2019s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol. During the Cold War the U.S. once ran 17 installations and more than 10,000 personnel on the island; today Pituffik hosts on the order of 150 American military personnel, according to the same reporting.<\/p>\n

Trump said Friday the agreement gives the United States \u201cpermanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland.\u201d Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it a historic win that \u201cpermanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer,\u201d Fox News Digital reported \u2014 zero purchase price, not zero construction costs later. A State Department official told ABC the pact \u201cexplicitly guarantees the United States the complete ability to do what it deems is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the American continent,\u201d and that only the U.S. and allies could make sensitive investments there.<\/p>\n

Denmark is not reading from the same cue card. Frederiksen said Monday she is pleased with a prospect that strengthens common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, is good for NATO and Europe, and \u201cat the same time recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.\u201d Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen told national broadcaster TV2 the arrangement should put Arctic security under NATO\u2019s collective watch rather than leaving it solely to Washington and Copenhagen, CBC News reported. Greenland and Denmark\u2019s joint statement also said the deal still needs \u201cnecessary parliamentary procedures to enter into force.\u201d<\/p>\n

Context, short sentences: Trump spent months refusing to rule out military or economic force to acquire Greenland. That triggered a January diplomatic crisis inside NATO. Greenlanders said the island is not for sale. This deal is the off-ramp \u2014 more bases, no deed transfer, competing slogans about who \u201ccontrols\u201d what. Soft power is not a flag filter on a map. Soft power is reading the sovereignty line twice.<\/p>\n
