I know the sentence. It is what a company says when it hands you two pieces of paper in the same envelope: one that changes the job you said yes to, and one that pays you to leave before the change lands. Nobody is fired in that memo. Nobody has to be. The commute does the firing, the deadline does the counting, and the press release gets to say the people who walked out did it of their own free will. It is the corporate version of asking a guest if they’d like to stay for dinner while you turn off the furnace.

Here is the record. The Los Angeles Times and Variety reported Oct. 26, 2026, that Skydance — the company that closed its $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on Oct. 6 and took the Skydance name — sent employees a memo from CEO David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz offering a “one-time” voluntary buyout to eligible staff and announcing “a five-day in-office policy across all of Skydance,” phased in by location. Business Insider, which put the deal at $110 billion, reported the terms: two weeks of pay per year of service, with a decision due by Nov. 8 at 11 p.m. Eastern — thirteen days after the memo. Most WBD employees, BI reported, had been required in the office three days a week; Paramount went to five days in January and offered severance to staffers who didn’t want to come back. The memo did not set a target number for how many people the company wants to see go. The Times put the rest of the arithmetic on the table: more than $80 billion in debt, a promise to cut $6 billion in costs over three years and $2 billion within the first year, and an August report from Los Angeles County estimating that 4,500 jobs in the county could be eliminated over three years.

Now the defense, and the memo writes its own. “As we bring our teams together, we recognize that not everyone will see their future here, and we respect that.” “Please know we don’t take any of this lightly.” On the office: “We truly believe this is in the best interest of our company and our people.” On the mood: “we don’t just want to succeed. We want to win.” And on Day One, per Variety, the same executives wrote that “integrating two companies will bring change, including difficult decisions that affect our workforce,” and promised to handle it “thoughtfully and respectfully.” Fair is fair: a buyout with a formula beats a pink slip on a Friday, two weeks a year is real money to a lifer, and the Times reports Ellison has said the savings won’t “primarily” come from labor but from technology, procurement and “real estate optimalization,” with at least $30 billion a year still going to content. Fine. Then look at the sequence. First you raise the price of staying — two more commuting days a week for most of the WBD side. Then, in the same breath, you offer a price for going, with a clock on it. Then you say whoever takes it chose. That is not a choice architecture; that is a hallway with one door propped open. And “real estate optimalization” next to “five days in the office” is a phrase pair I am going to need a minute with. I am not waiting on a regulator to rescue anyone here, and I wouldn’t trust the one that shows up. The company built this door itself.

Taryn says the twins have adopted a five-day in-crib policy, phased by location, and that she has offered herself a one-time voluntary buyout of two weeks’ sleep per year of service. Nobody has accepted. Joey wants to know if he can take the buyout from a job he doesn’t have. I love them. They are seasoning.

“Voluntary” is the alibi. The thirteen-day clock is the story. Sit with it until it confesses. Somebody took on more than $80 billion in debt to buy a studio, promised the lenders $6 billion back, and then wrote a memo in which the workers are the only people in the building with a deadline and the only people described as choosing. The lenders aren’t choosing. The executives aren’t choosing. The commute is. The cardigan stays. Fill the notebook. Then ask, out loud, at the next all-hands: if leaving is voluntary, why does it expire, who picked the number, and how many of us are you hoping will pick it?

Sources:

Los Angeles Times, Samantha Masunaga, “Skydance offers voluntary buyouts to some employees,” Oct. 26, 2026

Variety, Todd Spangler, “Skydance Is Offering Employees Voluntary Buyouts Ahead of Layoffs, Adopts 5-Days-per-Week In-Office Policy,” Oct. 26, 2026

Business Insider, James Faris, “Skydance tells employees to return to the office 5 days a week or take a buyout,” Oct. 26, 2026

— Theo Ashford-Lindström

Skydance, which closed its $111 billion Warner Bros.
