The pump declined the invitation.

The Associated Press, via NBC News, reports the national average for regular gas hit $4.14 heading into the holiday — nearly a dollar higher than last year and above the prior Labor Day record of $3.82 from 2012 (AAA). Diesel is the quieter violence: a national average of $5.85 a gallon on Friday, a record, which means trucks, groceries, and every delivery that was supposed to “save you a trip” now tax you twice.

Axios, citing Brown University’s Iran War Energy Cost Tracker as of Monday morning, puts the running tab at roughly $100 billion in extra U.S. consumer energy costs since the war began Feb. 28 — climbing about $1 million every two minutes, more than $760 per average household. University of Michigan’s Joanne Hsu: wallet first. A home-care worker in Bakersfield told the Times she and her client are both short for gas. That is not a vibe.
