THE MISSILES CAME BACK | Kyiv’s three-day pause ends the way pauses end — with fires and a body count

The envoys left. The missiles came back. Peace theater, then the usual Tuesday.

Reuters reporting from Kyiv on Sept. 8 is blunt: Russia pummelled the capital with drones and missiles after a brief halt for U.S. peace negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who left Sunday following talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack killed five people; authorities put injuries near thirty. Fires hit multiple districts. At least 14 high-rises, a dorm, a school, a clinic, and warehouses were damaged. EU ambassador Katarina Mathernova wrote that “Kyiv was exploding and burning.” Zelenskiy called it a complex strike aimed at causing “as much harm to life as possible,” and said ballistic missiles remain particularly hard to intercept. Ukraine’s air force said it downed nearly all cruise missiles and two ballistic ones. Almost. Almost is not a shelter.

Both capitals had paused strikes for three days so the envoys could move. Then the clock ran out. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged allies for pressure and interceptors — stocks of the latter critically low. A supermarket worker named Yana, 19, told Reuters what every pause teaches: when foreign guests arrive it goes quiet, you exhale, and when they leave “everything went back to normal.” Normal, in this war, is a playground with puddles and searchlights.

Elsewhere the same day: passenger trains hit, a railway worker killed in a double-tap drone strike in Zaporizhzhia, market wounded in Odesa, drones drifting into Moldovan and Romanian airspace. The front lines stay largely static while long-range air war does the politics. Witkoff had talked “substantive” progress and trilateral hopes. Progress that expires with the escort detail is not a deal. It is a schedule.

Deb will text that we are not doing “missile math” at dinner. Buck will say “just end it already.” I love them. I also love a midterm season that can sell balloon drops in Dallas while Kyiv counts the hours after the guests leave. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly. Soft power is not a three-day courtesy for the motorcade. Soft power is interceptors that arrive before the next pause.

Sources: Reuters, Sept. 8, 2026 (Klitschko death toll, injuries, damage list, Mathernova, Zelenskiy “complex” attack, air force intercepts, Yana quote, regional strikes); ABC / other wire corroboration of the post-envoy resume.
