They ordered agents to lie and called it election integrity. Soft power, if soft power is a whistleblower memo that still remembers state law is not optional cosplay.
ABC News and Los Angeles Times reporting Tuesday is blunt: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and California Sen. Alex Padilla say a DHS whistleblower alleges the department directed hundreds of agents to access state voter rolls even if they must “misrepresent themselves,” “fabricate” evidence of fraud, and violate state laws — under a program branded the “Unlawful Voter Initiative.” Soft power is not a slogan on a podium. Soft power is an officer who is not told to become a fake voter for the midterms.
Here is the cardigan-left spreadsheet. Agents were allegedly pulled from national-security work; HSI and USCIS figures in the telling. Padilla says state systems warn that unauthorized access is illegal — and officers were told to proceed anyway with promises they would not be held personally liable. Schumer and Padilla sent a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin demanding the initiative end and that Congress get answers. Soft power is not a liability waiver for breaking the neighbor’s portal. Soft power is a badge that still answers to the law it prints on the door.
DHS pushed back: the department says it accessed publicly available voter rolls, cross-referenced them with known noncitizens, called the work “not rocket science,” noted HSI is investigating election fraud, and claims noncitizens do vote. Padilla calls the whole thing a pretext to intimidate, disenfranchise, and challenge November’s results — and notes states like California refused to hand over records, so agents allegedly pose as voters instead. Soft power is not a press statement that shrugs “publicly available.” Soft power is not manufacturing TECS-style law-enforcement records against people who may already be citizens because a quota needed a name.
Deb will reply-all that we are not doing “agent math” at dinner. Buck will text “just check the rolls already.” I love them. I also love a midterm season that can sell balloon drops in Dallas while hundreds of federal officers get pulled off national-security desks to cosplay as voters on state websites. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly. Soft power is not a wild-goose chase dressed as integrity. Soft power is an election that does not need fabricated files to survive November.
