They announced an energy truce and called it peace. Soft power, if soft power is a Truth Social victory lap that neither capital signed.
Al Jazeera, the Los Angeles Times / AP, and Bloomberg all put the same overnight on the ledger for Thursday, September 17, 2026: Russia hit Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa with missiles and drones; Ukraine answered at a major oil refinery in Yaroslavl and a military airfield in Rostov. Soft power is not a presidential announcement that the war politely paused for diesel prices. Soft power is noticing who still has apartment towers on fire while the Oval Office sells a handshake that never happened.
Here is the cardigan-left spreadsheet. Ukraine’s Air Force said it destroyed or suppressed 131 of Russia’s aerial targets in the overnight barrage — ballistic and cruise missiles, drones, decoys — with strikes recorded across dozens of locations. At least 19 people were injured, including children: Kyiv authorities named a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy among the wounded; Odesa reported seven injured, including two children, with high-rise apartments damaged and a private house destroyed. Soft power is not a casualty table that still has to include kids before breakfast. Soft power is a ceasefire claim that collapses the first night it meets an apartment roof.
Days earlier, President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop hitting each other’s energy targets — a claim Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from Kyiv, said neither side actually accepted. The Los Angeles Times adds the Kyiv-side receipt: Zelensky told CBS that an energy truce was discussed with Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, but Kyiv would agree only if Russia stops hitting Ukrainian energy sites. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Ukraine is ready for an energy-and-Black-Sea package — and has yet to see Russia prepared to match. Soft power is not a midterm talking point about diesel. Soft power is a truce that both armies can find on the same map.
Ukraine hit back where the war still runs on fuel. Zelensky said a joint operation struck the Yaroslavl oil refinery northeast of Moscow; Reuters industry sources said Slavneft-YANOS halted crude processing after equipment damage. Zelensky also reported damage at a Rostov air base — an An-12, two An-26s, and three helicopters in his telling. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed hits on metallurgical and electronics plants, military-industrial sites, energy and transport facilities, plus ships in Chornomorsk. Al Jazeera notes Moscow is promising mass attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid into winter — the same grid that nearly collapsed last season. Soft power is not calling that a pause. Soft power is admitting winter is a weapon and a press conference is not a shield.
Deb will reply-all that we are not doing “refinery math” during carpool. Buck will text “just shoot the drones already — we covered this.” I love them. I also love a White House that can sell soft power as an energy truce while Kyiv counts nineteen injured and Yaroslavl still burns on the wire. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly. Soft power is not announcing peace for the diesel chart. Soft power is a ceasefire both capitals actually signed — before the next nursery school takes debris.
Sources: Al Jazeera (staff / AP / Reuters), Sept. 17, 2026 (19+ injured; Kyiv / Zaporizhzhia / Odesa; 131 aerial targets destroyed or suppressed; Trump energy-truce claim neither side accepted; Russia vows mass winter energy attacks; Yaroslavl refinery + Rostov air base claims); Los Angeles Times / AP (Samya Kullab), Sept. 17, 2026 (19 injured incl. children; Zelensky CBS pushback; Witkoff / Kushner discussion; Sybiha energy + Black Sea readiness; 10- and 12-year-old among Kyiv injured; Tanzanian-flagged ship captain killed); Bloomberg, Sept. 17, 2026 (Russia air attacks + Ukraine strike on major Russian refinery as evidence sides have not agreed to energy truce); Reuters, Sept. 17, 2026 (YANOS halts crude processing after drone damage). Fill the truce. Then ask who benefits when “peace” is a post that neither army signed.
