They froze the grid and called it winter. Soft power, if soft power is remembering that a power plant is not a weather report — and that a child under rubble is not a prelude you can shrug into the heating season.
On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, BBC News reported that Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the spring, primarily targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi said. At least five people were killed in overnight attacks across the country, including a child in the Kyiv region, Koretskyi said; other local tallies put deaths higher as reporting updated through the morning. Soft power is not a seasonal calendar. Soft power is a grid that still keeps the lights on when the missiles prefer darkness.
Koretskyi said that since summer there has effectively not been a single day without enemy attacks on energy infrastructure, but that a mass and combined attack of this scale had occurred for the first time since the end of the last heating season. Eleven regions were hit overnight — residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises, and railways among the targets. Ukraine’s biggest private energy firm, DTEK, said power to 8,000 homes had been restored after “a difficult night” for the capital. Russia’s defense ministry said one target was the Trypilska power station, the largest supplier of electricity to Kyiv; operator Centrenergo confirmed damage and said it was assessing the scale. Soft power is not a winter prelude. Soft power is a plant that still stands when the smoke clears.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said there were strikes on critical infrastructure in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions. On Wednesday, some households in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions remained without power, Ukraine’s energy ministry said; grid operator Ukrenergo advised residents not to use powerful appliances between 10:00 and 16:00 local time. Kyiv woke under thick acrid smoke; an air-raid alert lingered; residents were told to keep windows closed until it cleared. Soft power is not outsourcing empathy to the heating season. Soft power is a republic that still treats civilian power as something other than a target list.
Deb will say we are not doing “grid weather” before the casserole. Buck will text that a power plant is just a fuse box with worse press. I love them. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly, and I can still tell the difference between winter and a war crime with better branding. Soft power is not waiting for the next blackout to invent a conscience. Soft power is heat a child can still wake up to — and a world that refuses to call the smoke a season.

Fill the notebook. Then ask who benefits when winter is the word that arrives after the missiles.
