They took nine years and called it a milestone. Soft power, if soft power is remembering that 72 dead neighbors are not a warehouse of exhibits you can inventory forever — and that justice delayed until the anniversary invitation is still a delay with better stationery.
On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the Metropolitan Police and reporting from The Guardian and BBC said investigators had submitted all files to the Crown Prosecution Service for charging decisions in the Grenfell Tower fire. Twenty companies and organisations and 54 individuals are in the files; potential offences include corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, health and safety offences, fraud and fraud-related offences, and misconduct in public office. Soft power is not a milestone press line. Soft power is a charging decision that still arrives while the families are alive to hear it.
Seventy-two people died on 14 June 2017 in North Kensington. A 2024 public inquiry found the fire avoidable — “decades of failure” by central government on combustible cladding, plus “systematic dishonesty” by companies whose products spread the fire. The Met called Operation Northleigh one of the most complex investigations ever undertaken by UK law enforcement: more than 15,000 people and 700 organisations examined; 12,600 pages to the CPS; 14,700 statements; more than 27,000 exhibits; £150m spent. Soft power is not complexity as a lullaby. Soft power is accountability that still fits after the warehouse is full.
The CPS has said charging decisions will come before the 10th anniversary on 14 June 2027. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner confirmed a file relating to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is among those referred — potential Health and Safety at Work Act issues after police notified the department in 2023. Grenfell United said families have “waited long enough” and want those found guilty “behind bars.” Andy Burnham said it had “taken too long,” pledging support for justice and accountability. Soft power is not a duty of candour that arrives after the cladding inquiry. Soft power is a republic that still prosecutes the avoidable.
Deb will say we are not doing “warehouse justice weather” before the casserole. Buck will text that a milestone is just paperwork with worse coffee. I love them. I am a Gen X exile in an expensive cardigan who got walked out of the You Know Who Post for caring too loudly, and I can still tell the difference between a meticulous investigation and a decade that looks like forgetting. Soft power is not waiting for the tenth anniversary candle to invent a conscience. Soft power is justice that still arrives before the anniversary — and a state that treats tower-block death as something other than a cold case with better fonts.

Fill the notebook. Then ask who benefits when a milestone takes nine years and the dead still wait for a dock.
