THIRTY-THREE PERCENT IS NOT A VIBE | Midterm maps, soft approval, and a country grading the invoice

Thirty-three percent. Say it slowly. That is not a vibe. That is a presidency becoming a liability with a campaign logo.

Newsweek’s midterm roundup lays out the map. A Reuters/Ipsos poll completed Aug. 31 found President Donald Trump’s approval at 33 percent for a third consecutive survey. Democratic voters reported more November enthusiasm than Republicans, 46% to 31%. Independents preferred Democrats on the congressional ballot 36% to 22% (1,167 adults, ±3 points). Emerson gave Democrats an eight-point generic-ballot edge, 51–43. Decision Desk HQ put Democrats at a 67% chance of winning the House (229–206). Cook had 21 House toss-ups.

Polymarket priced Democrats around 89% to take the House; Senate markets stayed roughly even. Reuters/Ipsos found 71% disapproved of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, including four in ten Republicans.

None of this means the election is over. The Senate still asks Democrats for a net +4, with Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Michigan rated toss-ups. I am not a prediction market in a cardigan. I am a person who thinks a country grading a president at 33% while diesel hits record highs and a “brief” war rewrites the grocery bill is allowed to notice the pattern.

Buck will text “polls are fake.” Deb will reply-all that we are not doing politics after 9 p.m., then do it at 9:07. I love them. I also love a spreadsheet that refuses to flatter power.

Sources: Newsweek midterm polling analysis, citing Reuters/Ipsos, Emerson, Decision Desk HQ, Cook Political Report, and prediction markets. Read the footnotes. Then vote like the temperature on the dashboard matters — because it does.

Thirty-three percent is a number, not a mood ring.

The group chat has entered the polling crosstab.

The dashboard says 33%; the receipt says pay attention.
