They call it economic warfare. My commute calls it Tuesday. Somewhere between those two names is a country that still pretends the invoice is temporary.
Reuters reporting carried by The Straits Times on Sept. 8 is blunt: Iran threatened the United States with “economic warfare” and said it had fired an advanced Qassem Basir missile at U.S. warships — days after both sides traded blows again. The six-month war still runs on pauses and flare-ups. The U.S. last reported striking three Iranian oil tankers over the weekend. Iranian state media said the Qassem Basir flew in attacks on several U.S. vessels. The U.S. military said its ships evaded the missiles. Evaded is not the same as finished.
Then the region did what regions do when a “brief” war ages into a season: it spread. An Iran-backed Houthi attack hit several cities in Saudi Arabia, wounding 73 people, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said Tuesday. That is not a vibes sentence. That is seventy-three people becoming a midterm footnote while Dallas sells balloon drops.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, keeps drawing lines on water. He has vowed a new restricted zone in the Gulf plus maps for a shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz — the chokepoint that used to carry about one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG. On Sept. 8 he put it on X with the kind of clarity my family group text never manages: economic warfare will be met by a maritime exclusion zone across the Persian Gulf to the blockade perimeter, and the operational posture toward U.S. warships and bases has been “fundamentally recalibrated.” Ships that enter, he has said, go on an Iranian sanctions list. Sanctions for entering. A velvet rope made of missiles.
President Trump posted that oil prices will drop “precipitously” when “we win the war with Iran” — three dollars a gallon, then ultimately below two. Futures are not a tank. Operation Epic Fury’s February aims — end Iran’s nuclear program, halt attacks on neighbors, create conditions for Iranians to topple their leadership — remain unmet while Tehran’s rulers stay in power and talk about collecting fees from ships using the strait. Polls show the war is unpopular in the U.S., which is another way of saying November is already reading the pump.
Deb will reply-all that we are not doing “missile math” before coffee. Buck will text “just keep the boats moving.” I love them. I also love a republic that can stage a midterm convention without putting this bill on the teleprompter. I am still soft for democracy. I am not soft for being told the Navy is winning while the corridor gets redrawn and seventy-three people in Saudi Arabia become a Tuesday number.
