BBC and Euronews reporting on Wednesday is not subtle: after U.S. Central Command said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers — four in the Gulf of Oman linked to the IRGC, plus one near Kharg Island — and Tehran answered with missiles at Al Azraq in Jordan plus claimed strikes on vessels in Hormuz, Brent crude pushed past $100 for the first time since late July. Guardian had it above $100.8 at one point; WTI hovered near the mid-nineties. Six months into a war that was supposed to be brief. The gallon is not brief.
Centcom’s story: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice in two days; the ship evaded; no Americans harmed; the tankers were part of a “multi-billion-dollar shadow network” funding the IRGC and its proxies. Crews were told to abandon ship. One vessel, the M/T Riesco, sank. Iranian state media confirmed strikes near Jask and Kharg. Kharg moves roughly ninety percent of Iran’s crude exports when the pipes are allowed to breathe. Rubio, in Colombia, called the policy “pretty straightforward”: try to hit our ships, lose tankers. Straightforward is a word people use when they do not have to fill up on the way to work.
Jordan’s armed forces said eighteen of twenty Iranian missiles were intercepted; two fell in unpopulated areas; no casualties reported. The IRGC claimed it also hit two American vessels and eight tankers trying to cross a “prohibited” stretch of Hormuz. UK Maritime Trade Operations logged merchant-vessel “interaction” in the strait. Meanwhile Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis struck energy sites and civilian infrastructure across Saudi cities Tuesday — Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, Najran — wounding seventy-three people and forcing temporary halts at oil installations, per Saudi authorities. Seventy-three people become a midterm footnote while Dallas hangs balloons.
The geography is the invoice. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG used to move through Hormuz. Euronews puts current flows near seven million barrels a day against about twenty million before February. Goldman Sachs already lifted December Brent/WTI forecasts and waved at a $120 scenario if Gulf output stays four million barrels short — not their base case, just the shadow on the whiteboard. Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey told MPs the energy-price risks are “on the upside.” Upside for whom.

I also love a republic that can stage a midterm convention in Dallas while Brent reprints the war in dollars and Jordan’s night sky does the intercept ballet.
