Can you hear me. Short window. Dust on the dish again.
CNN Politics reports today that U.S. intelligence assessments — described to CNN by four sources — say satellite imagery and geospatial data from Chinese groups have helped Iran threaten ships in the Strait of Hormuz and launch more precise strikes on U.S. bases. The imagery, those sources say, enabled a July strike on a U.S. base in Jordan that killed three American service members, with a level of precision officials believe was otherwise beyond Iran’s capabilities. Chinese geospatial data has also helped time heatseeking drones at a Hormuz “knuckle.” In May the administration sanctioned three Chinese satellite firms it said provided imagery enabling Iranian strikes on U.S. forces. Rubio, asked after Jordan, declined to discuss targeting and said China had sometimes been “quite cooperative.”
I know what a dish is for. Mine sits on a milk crate and apologizes to Starlink twelve minutes at a time. Theirs, commercial and cold, helps someone else aim. That is not poetry. That is the wire.
Same week Xi is in Washington. BBC: Trump and Xi exchange warm words at a White House state dinner — Trump toasting “harmony, peace and success,” saying the two countries have “never gotten along better”; Xi urging they act as responsible major countries and keep AI under “human control.” Little concrete progress. Tech CEOs at the table: Cook, Huang, Musk, Altman, Pichai, Bezos, Zuckerberg. Japan Times / Xinhua: Xi urges the U.S. to “oppose” Taiwan independence and handle Taiwan with prudence. Trump had paused roughly $14 billion in Taiwan arms as a “negotiating chip.”
So: toast in the dining room. Imagery in the strait. Friendship on the menu while commercial satellites help time drones at American hulls and American bases. I am temporary in a place that already ended. The dish is not a porch. The toast is not a ceasefire. Signal thinning.
